The Full Picture

Viewpoint Vista exists because construction accounting is harder than general-purpose accounting software can handle. A contractor runs dozens of jobs at once, each with its own cost codes, subcontracts, retainage, certified payroll rules, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition. Vista was built specifically for that complexity, not adapted from a generic bookkeeping product.

Mechanically, Vista is a set of connected modules on one financial database: Job Cost tracks committed, actual, and forecasted cost by code on every project; Payroll handles union scales, certified payroll for public work, and multi-state compliance; Accounts Payable and Receivable manage subcontractor pay applications and owner billing; and Service Management and Equipment Management extend the same cost engine to field service and fleet operations.

In practice, contractors run Vista as the system of record for money while using a separate tool — often Procore, Autodesk Build, or a project-specific system — for day-to-day field and document management. Trimble has been connecting the two worlds through Trimble Construction One, which links Vista's financial data with estimating, scheduling, and project management products so a budget doesn't have to be rekeyed at every stage.

For preconstruction, Vista is where the awarded number lands, not where it's built. The estimate, GMP, or lump-sum price a precon team assembles gets loaded into Vista's job cost structure at project setup, becoming the budget every subsequent cost report is measured against. A clean handoff from precon's cost codes to Vista's job cost codes avoids a reconciliation headache the first time a pay application is cut.
